General Exhaust Filtering Question

So we now filter our exhaust to keep pollutants out of the atmosphere.
Then the filter gets full.
So to clean the filter, we heat it up and burn out the clog... into the atmosphere...
???

Can someone explain how this differs from not filtering the exhaust?

Diesel soot (the black powder) is a powder of material that is partially burned fuel attached to carbon from burnt fuel, the powder is lightly saturated with fuel and it takes a couple of days for the particles to settle to the ground. Then, wherever the soot winds up, a small amount of unburnt diesel is present and in the atmosphere.

After the DPF has cleaned itself, the soot particles have been cooked so that the unburnt fuel is gone. At this point the soot particles are a white/grey ash, much lighter and non toxic than black soot. The ash does not stick to your bumper or trailers either.

It's like Kingsford Charcoal, when you open the bag, the charcoal is black. When you dump out the bottom of your grill after you cook, the charcoal is white/grey powder.

The difference is, the ash is non toxic.
