I'm looking at buying this 04 F250 Superduty Crewcab Lariat Powerstroke, fully loaded, 43,000 miles, super clean! I hear bad things about the 6.0, should I stay away or is it that bad? Any input is greatly appreciated!
Study up in the 6.0 section.
Most are good, some are not.
Maintenance is the key.
You can always run the Oasis report to see the history (dealer) on the truck.
BTW, that is REAL low mileage; I'd compare the wear and tear to the mileage to see if anything smells.
I have an 06 with 70,000 miles and have had no problems with the motor. But that's not to say I haven't taken it to the shop 4 times for other issues. Motor is fine, truck is junk.
Head to a Ford dealer with the VIN and have them print off an OASIS report for you. This will tell you of the truck's repair history while it was under warranty and whether or not it's a good buy.
What you may want to check for is whether or not it's a late '04 truck. The late '04 trucks have some improvements over the '03 and early '04 motors that seem to have less issues as time goes on. The sure fire way to know is to look for the GPCM (Silver Box with a green and black connector going to it) on the passenger side valve cover and if the connectors are pointed towards the ground, it could be an '03 motor. If the connectors are pointed towards the front of the truck it's a late '04 motor with the ICP on the valve cover.
I've got an '04 CC dually with the 6.0. It's biggest problem was the EGR clogging up. Take it to the dealer, clean it out, and it was good to go for awhile. Last time in the shop they had a new program from Ford that they loaded into it. Now when the truck is idling every so often you can hear the exhaust note change for a minute or so. It drops down into a low rumble. Sounds like it's clearing its throat or something. Since then no more clogging problems. Other than that it's been a decent motor and pulls well.
Thanks for the info guys, I really appreciate it! I will definetly check out the Oasis report, it is an 01/04 truck if that helps for which motor (early/late). Were there recalls for the EGR or the FICM that will show up on the Oasis? Thanks again...
Any and ALL work done at a FORD dealership will show up in the OASIS report. If the previous owner had any work done at another mechanic's shop, then you will not know what work has been done.
There were not any recalls for the EGR or FICM (although there should have been....), but if they have been replaced or worked on, it will show up.
