"Jumped" on mine last night and the kick down was spectacular. For a big hoss, this thing will get up and move. The rev sound reminded me of my 99 Cobra. 1500 miles and it's starting to "loosen up" very nicely. Amazing mileage if I keep my foot out of it--torque converter lets you "coast" when moving which helps me average over 18 mpg. As good or better than my V6 2006 MDX. I am impressed with this truck.
Do you reckon when my 2010 4x4 supercab with 3.73 gears 4.6 3v will run around my buddies 06 fx4 supercab? I am sure he will wanna test it as he is pretty keen on a 5.4 but I am thinking this 4.6 is going to surprise him.

I doubt it, the '06 5.4 is a 3 valve engine and the FX4 comes with 3.73's. It will no doubt be very close though.
I am fairly sure his truck has 3.73's i believe that was the gear that was standard on fx4's for the 06 model year. But i know my truck will get up and run pretty well.

Yeah it really is a great motor, the original mod motor. The one thing I think is funny is everybody on here and other forums is asking the question I tow what motor should I have. The bottom line is a 5.4 doesn't have much if any more noticeable power over a 4.6 3v, another fact is they are both overated in the towing department, take for instance my truck is rated to tow 9400 pounds.. thats great, I'll never put more than 4k behind it but if you put 9400 behind a 4.6 or a 5.4 niether of them are gonna like it or pull it very well. I am a diesel mechanic and I am a firm believer in if you are gonna tow over 9-10k get a diesel thats what they are made for.

Absolutely.......but for 5k loads and under these 4.6 3V engines will do fine. 9-10000 pounds would be insane in a half ton. I think all vehicle tow ratings are rather optimistic at best. My 06 MDX was rated at 3500 pounds, but 3000 pounds behind it scared the crap out of me on big hills in the rain, hence back to a truck.
I absolutely wanted the 4.6 3valve as it is pretty economical and will scoot when pressed. I'm under 2000 miles and still averaging 18-19 mpg (unless I hammer it a lot). Can't complain about that as my 02 anemic 4.7 RAM could barely eek 14 mpg and really struggled towing anything.
I as well just bought a 2010 F-150 with the 4.6L 3V V8. Don't worry man! I'm loving mine. I pulled a 10' trailer full of firewood and a 5.5 ft bed full of firewood and the truck handled it pretty well! This is a crew cab XLT FYI. When I was getting up to highway speed the truck was vibrating an awful lot but when I set the cruise at 65 mph it was fine. I also hauled 1500 pounds of 50 pound corn bags in the bed. The truck handled almost like nothing was there. My son's 02 F-150 was all over the road and the front end was WAAAAYYYY up in the air when we hauled that much feed in his bed!! They've definetly made improvements. Best half-ton on the market by far. Enjoy the truck. Mine's been great so far. And you can't forget the sweet-sounding stock exhaust!!
I am putting 502 hp and 497 TQ to the wheels with my 4.6 3 valve in my 10 Mustang. I have a 4.6 3V truck on hold at the dealership waiting for me to close on my old house sale next week.
