I have a '01 V10 and sometimes after the truck has sat awhile without being driven.( a week or 2) sometimes when it starts up it has a miss. It is most noticeable at idle and slow acceleration. When iding you can hear the misfire at the exhaust. It pops and almost sounds like a baffle is broken but also you can feel the hesitation at slow speeds. After the truck has been run for a while it goes away. Yesterday I ran the truck for 10 minutes to get to a friend's and it was misfiring the whole way. When I left 5 hours later, the truck ran like there never was a problem. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas?? I thought a plugged catalytic that blowsout or maybe a muffler baffle that is broken but the miss keeps going away before I can try to diagnose. Maybe electrical??
You are probably getting condensation in on of the plug holes and a bad boot is causing a misfire. I would buy a new set of boots and clean the plug holes out and seal them with dialectic grease when you install them.
The condesation part makes sense because it seems that it has been worse after it rains. Even though the truck wasn't driven in the rain it is probably getting extra moisture plus the humidity the last 3 weeks has been really high. To inspect is it a matter of just looking at the boots for wear and tear or is there some sort of other test. I know I used to run my old Nova in the dark to try and see if you could see arcing from a bad plug wire. Any tricks of the trade I can try??
I think I am going to be a guinea pig for the ebay aftermarket ignition coils. I figure if I'm going take the time to pull the coils to check the boots, I might as well as replace the coils. I can spend $50 a piece for OEM or $106 for a 10 pack of aftermarket coils with the boot. I will keep the original coils just in case but for $100, I thought what the heck....
Well changed my mind tonight because I just got done pulling all the coils and doing the inspection, I found 4 boots that were covered in rust and a few had cracks at the bottom of the boots. I bought 10 new BOOTS for $60 from Oreilly auto and installed them tonight. Truck seem to be running better and I am excited to see if there is a difference when I pull the TT this weekend. Thanks for all the help. I guess the next time it rains hard or humidity is high I will know for sure but I am hoping I'm good to go.
