Not sure if anyone has seen this issue, but I have a 2000 (V-8) F-150, that is leaking radiator. I took it to a shop and they applied pressure, but found no leaks. I can also smell the coolant when I first turn the AC on.
i would guess heater core, but you should see some evidence of "wet" on the floor or under the truck. if it was blowing into the air duct, you would see some vapor on the window or duct louvers.. you might try a sealer, but if the heater core is rotted, that mmight be a short time fix. If its a pin hole, you might get by for a long time.
I like using GM P/N 3634621 sealant tabs. I see Bar's Leaks also sells similar in their Radiator Stop leak Tablets P/N HDC. They also have a Powder Radiator Stop Leak P/N G12BP.
I suspect the heater core has just slightly started to seep. It would be bad enough to make the smell due to the heat in the core, but not produce large volume of antifreeze to be seen for awhile.
I have a 2001 F-150 Super Crew 5.4 and it just started leaking coolant. I know where it's leaking but don't know what it's called. It's at the bottom of the thing that the heater hose comes in to on the passenger side front of the engine next to the alternator. Looks like just a gasket but i don't know what to buy.

from the pic it appears it's your intake gasket you would need to get 2 while you have the intake off take a close look at the hose going from the back of the pump to the heater core( it's in the valley)
It's not intake. It's the piece that the heater hose goes in to. It goes all the way around the alternator to the other side where the thermostat is. Anyone know what it's called or the best way to make it stop leaking?
its called a cross over tube and it bolts to the bottom of the intake manifold.. it dont come off from the top. I used sealer for a year, then took my manifold off to repair it. THE bottom of the plastic manifold was acutally damaged. Its not a gasket its a groove in the plastic with an o-ring inside... MOst buy a new manifold if its bad. I filled the o-ring groove with epoxy, filed smooth, and made gaskets like you would 20 years ago... i got photos somewhere.
I'm going to repair it tomorrow so what parts do i need to buy? Can i use the same intake manifold? What's the easiest way to do it? Any tips after you did it? Thanks for your help.
take the manifold off and flip it upside down. take off the 6-7 small screws that hold the alluminum crossover to the plastic manifold. you will see o-ring seals in the plastic, and a flat face on the alunimum. If the o-rings are bad you will need to buy new set. If the manifold has a broken or damaged lip that holds the o-ring, you need to think what to do next. New manifold is about $200. Like i said, i took a small die grinder and rough up the groove and removed the damaged part of plastic. I put a ring of duct tape inside the manifold hole to build a dam, then poured the groove and o-ring hole full of epoxy. After it dried i filed it flat so it matched up with the aluminum crossover. I made a gasket and put RTV on both sides. I bought new manifold gaskets at Auto Zone. Scrape the old off be carefull not to drop parts into the cylinder ports. Double check the two tubes laying in the valley or VEE. Some have said they saw corrosion on these two pipes and can have leaks. Really not too bad of a job. Easier than i was expecting. I took the opportunity to put on new coils on the pllugs.
Sounds good. Thanks you. Just praying that the manifold and everything else is in good shape and just needs new o-rings. Let me know if you think of anything else or find any more pics. What engine parts did you have to remove to get the manifold off? Did you leave the alternator? Thanks.
take the alternator off. i left the injectors in the manifold, just removed the fuel rails. take as much of air box off as needed for clearance. take phtos of the hoses and all the extra crap to refer to for reassembly.
