4x4 not working

So i decide to turn on my four wheel drive for the first time in a month or so i thought. after a few seconds my a/c stops blowing out the vents and starts blowing out of the defog vents. But there is no 4X4 Turn the switch and a few minutes later my a/c works OK. Where do i begin with this one?

Vacuum pump mine did the same thing a few months ago. Easy fix but an exspensive little part. If you can find it on the net it will be way cheaper.

Search the forum it happens lots. Probably a vacuum leak. For me it was the 4x4 vacuum solenoid. I just swapped the part and it now works fine. I had the Ford tech check for vacuum leaks a few times when in for oil changes etc. and they said my 4x4 was fine. I think he meant I didn't have a leak in the hubs because it definitely didn't work. The light would come on but the hubs weren't locking. I saw another guy on a thread say his solenoid was bad, so I figured, why not. Shelled out the cash and tried it. Worked for me. But check the threads for ways to check for a vacuum leak because your situation may be different.

FYI the little bearing thingy on my solenoid was completely rusted. On the solenoid there is a plastic part that has what appears to be a metal ball or bearing up inside, somewhat visible from the outside. The new part had a nice shiny little ball thing. That's about as technical as I can get on that Maybe some of the techs can chime in on the correct terminology lol
