1994 clutch issue

when the clutch is cold no problems after a drive and everything gets warm and the clutch is released toward the top of the pedeal (almost fully released) i hear a popping sound coming from inside the tranny right about where the linkage goes in. any ideas what causes this do i need to worry? its a ZF5 it operates correctly catches and realeses fine but the noise is worrying me

Throwout sticking on the nosecone, Throwout fork not seated correctly on pivot, cracked/broken bellhousing are the things I'd be looking for.

How long since the fluid has been changed?

Souinds like something I would get checked out while it is still probably rather cheap to fix.

Right now you may be looking at a bushing or bearing, later when it fails you will most likely be looking at a lot more parts.

Fluid in the transmission, transfer case and axles needs changed just like it does in the engine.

I change my fluids every spring, all of them after a hard winter of plowing snow.

If you have never had a transmission apart, a transmission shop that knows what they are looking at would be your best bet.

stopped at the ford dealer in town on the way home from work today and they said it's either got to be the throughout bearing or the clutch fork it wearing out after listening to the noise.

guy at autozone said the same thing probably bearing or clutch fork....

luckily both are relatively cheap bearing 28 fork 31

won't be able to get the tranny out until this weekend to replace the parts buddy and his dad have done it before so im gonna be learning this weekend is it ok to drive it still shifts smoothly haven't had any real issues with it yet

you never know could let go backing out of driveway going slow or on highway at 70 chance you take. does it make any difference if you take it out of gear release the clutch and let truck just roll at speed.

it operates normal i haven't had any trouble with it i can feel it in the pedal very very softly like almost non existant and at road speed (45-70) i can;t hear the noise when releasing the clutch.... that could be because of the road noise but below that i can hear it but it still glides in and out of gear smoothly just like normal and the clutch catches and releases in the same spot as always.... im kinda leaning toward the clutch fork bein out of wack just a little.... but i'll probably replace the bearing and fork together for the piece of mind.... and ill be able to look at the clutch while im in there i guess.... iv'e never actually seen a clutch thats been used and only seen one new one so it'll be an experience for me.... also i was told that when replacing the clutch (hopefully not anytime soon) the flywheel can be turned rather than replaced..... true or not???

ZF 5 transmissions had dual mass flywheels.

I have never heard of anyone resurfacing a dual mass.

cost aside is this a wise decision?

Yes that is the set you need. I used the conversion from NAPA, but I would guess that the AZ parts would be the same. I have done this to 5 different trucks 2 IDIs and 3 early strokes with NO ill effects.

Any ill affects of a SMF conversion will takes years to show up ... a SMF will beat a ZF5 to death!

But not over night or in a couple years!
