I run a 97 F250HD, 4x4, super cab. Runs a 460 now, but changing to a stroker from Cars By Carl next year. It has an auto now, but I'm thinking of trying to go to a 6-spd when I do the motor swap. Should be 400 HP, 600 ft/LB and really the most I pull is a car trailer every now and then.
I been thinking about trying to use more of that power. If a guy could use a 6-speed like the T56 Magnum trans, with a dual OD, that would drop the RPMs down when on the road back across the plains. It shoud have plenty of power to still pul up hills in 5th with a trailer and when I'm off-road, it's low speed, so the initial gears wil be good for that, yet tall enough to still be viable in traffic.
Thoughts? There are a couple belhousings to bolt it right to the 460, so that is easy and it would make the build easier by getting rid of the computer controls for the A4ODE that I have now. Thanks in advance.
Hooking up the 4x4 would be tough with a T-56...have you looked at Keisler Transmission? They have all kinds of retro-fit kits that might be able to help. Other than that you may have to move to a divorced t-case with all kinds of custom drive shaft work. It would be a great project and the results could be awesome, but it would be very involved. What about adapting one of the newer 6-speed truck transmissions to the old block? As long as they aren't an integrated bell housing you should be able to mix and match, and possibly adapt your T-case to it like the factory.
Keep us posted on this swap (if it happens), I would love to see how you do it and the results.
Oh, one other idea would be to swap in a ZF-5 speed and install a Gear Vendors OD unit after the T-case. You could not use the OD in 4x4, but it would give you the double OD for highway hauling.
Disregard the Kiesler idea, they focus on muscle cars.
Thanks. I thought about the newer 6-speeds, but they run a creeper gear and only 1 overdrive, so I'd basically never use the creeper gear, not much of first and still be in the same place I am with OD. It would be like my old 4-spd Bronco that I never used 1st on.
I'll keep updated, but it may not happen due to the transfer case. I wonder if a newer transfer case could be bolted in also?? Hmm....
