my old 75 had the msd 6al hooked up to the stock dist. i could walk out and tap the key to start it. on the current truck i got it has the whole stock system. never starts as easy. im tempted to go to the 6al due to the fact that i have had good experiences with it, it has the rev limiters, and the ease of hooking up a tachometer.
Another reason I went to the aftermarket is that Im gonna swap in a built 460 that will be hot and all the parts will swap straight over. Differences of opinion I had trouble with my duraspark several times and was getting tired of it. Seemed like there was just junk being made from overseas. They both have the pluses and minus' but if you want to drop the money and can, it may be worth it.
I have been running the MSD ignition box and coil with my original distributor that has been recurved for the last 3 years with no problems. I will stick with using my original distributor for now and someday if I find myself doing a rebuild I may try the nonvacuum MSD distributor. If I don't like the results, then I can always go back the my original distributor that I know works good.
I have checked all of those mentioned. The starter is new. The timing has been set to 8, 10, and 12 degrees. It runs hot at 12, pings at 8, is decent at 10.
You definitely have a timing problem, because that is not normal.
8* BTDC should absolutely NOT ping. Pinging usually starts when you have TOO MUCH advance, so if you go up to 10* and the pinging goes away, something is wrong. Stock timing is usually 10* BTDC, but most people are able to get away with more than that, especially if their distributor has been re-curved. Pinging should not start until you go up to around 12* BTDC or so. With my own re-curved Duraspark ignition, I can run 14* BTDC and my truck doesn't ping or run hot at all, and my truck starts right up if I barely turn the key.
I would re-check your distributor position and/or timing. It sounds like your distributor is either in the wrong tooth or your timing is wrong. It is also not that uncommon for harmonic balancers to slip, making your timing marks incorrect.
Got the stock setup on my 74 with the 360 an you hit the key an it fires right up first time. The last tune up on it from what I was told was Sept. 96 it sounds like a new one. The whole truck is stock no upgrades at all on it looks like it came from the factory yesterday. No problems here plan on keeping it stock parts are cheap an easy to find why mess with a good thing.
