i was driving back to school today, and my truck shuddered about a dozen times on the highway during the course of the trip. when i got closer to school, i had to get out and lock my hubs and put in 4x4 cuz the snows getting deep. so then my truck starts whistling up front really bad. gets louder the faster i go. i unlocked the hubs and put it back in 2wd and it was still whistling, but not as loud. it doesn't make any noise under 5 mph. anyone got any ideas?
Is it a whistle like air blowing thru something, or a high screech like thin metal rubbing on a spinning part? Does using the brakes affect it at all? How about steering? Crosswinds? Does it get higher/louder with engine speed? Tire speed? Does it stop/change when you hit a bump?

its a high screech like metal rubbing on a spinning part. using the brakes changes the pitch, but only because the truck is slowing down. i didn't drive faster than 25 miles an hour with it making the noise, because it was only around town that it was making the noise. if it was making any noise on the interstate, then i didn't notice it. and it gets to be a louder pitch as tire speed increases, im not thinking it has anything to do with engine speed.
to be honest with you, the only time i put it in reverse, was getting into a parking space. i should have tried that before i parked it. right now theres about 8 inches of fresh snow down and we are supposed to have 20 by morning, so ill have to go dig it out and try that. do you think that could have caused the truck to shudder on the highway? im guessing thats another separate problem if its something caught in the brake rotor.
it very well could have made it shudder on the highway, think about this, a rock is harder than your brake pads. It will make the rotor want to stop turning which could cause a shudder.
well i had to drive 20 miles to a job interview today in the snow storm, and it was squealing like a pig for 10 miles, i had looked under there and couldn't see anything. so i turned my radio up so i couldn't hear it anymore.... yea i know i know..... but after about 5 minutes i turned the radio off and couldn't hear it anymore. drove another 30 or so miles and the sound hasn't come back. hopefully its gone. maybe it was something stuck in there and it finally came out. thanks for the help
