Still looking for a 360/390 for my '74 Hiboy- last option fell through. I realize putting in what came out is the best option, but I've located several buildable or even rebuilt motors from other engine families. Are these others just "bolt up and go", what are pros and cons?
I have a 4 speed. I went from a 300 I-6 to a 400 in a '76 f150 and remember lots of challenges; hoses, mounts, etc. I didn't know if things changed much when dealing with the F250. Why did Ford discontinue the FE? Is there something integral in the newer engine families that make them better?
As the folklore goes Ford had to drop the FE engines due to the new emissions limits that were being enacted.
Which doesn't make much sense in my mind, why create and develop an entirely new engine family than to just revise the cylinder heads and intake manifolds for an engine that had done an honorable job since 1958?
Which is even more puzzling given the 351M/400 was dropped only 4 years later after the FE was considered extinct.
Not one of Ford's better decisions in history no doubt.
Sorry for the ignorance, can someone define "dent"? Also, I'm not opposed to the 360/390, It's just been a little challenging finding a buildable motor. I was only checking options. It seems there are more 351/400's available. In highschool, I worked in a Ford parts dept. and we supplied a lot of 330/359 motors for Uhaul's F350-600 commercial fleet.
Any thoughts on those?
i've got a 361/391 complete i know its the ft motor but you can "convert" it to a 390 with a differant crank, or turn the nose down on it. and change the timing cover. or i may know of a running 390 a friend may be willing to part ways with. i dont know where you are at however...lol if you are thinking of any kind of MPG's forget about the 390...i have a built one in my 73 and it will move anything you could ever want to hook up to. but i get 7.5-8mpg on the highway loaded or empty. i've put 3K lbs in the back of the truck and it gets the same as if i run it empty. however it did ride much smoother...lol
