i removed the axle shaft from the passenger side dana 44 on my 78 f250 in order to grease and replace bearings. Apparently when i removed this shaft there was a small piece of what appered to be rope wrapped around the shaft inside the knuckle. I removed it because it looked like it didn't belong. After I reassemble the entire side and test drove it appears to be leaking 90 wt. down through the axle tubing and out the knuckle. Is there a seal I can replace in there? Was the rope some sort of seal?
my 78 f-150 dana 44 is doing the same thing but on both sides. i bought seals yesterday from bronco grave yard and im gonna install them myself when the get here. i was told and i've read as long as you put the diff back with the shims on the same side where they were you'll be fine.

The rope sounds like someones quick fix..
There are axle tube seals at the inner end, installed from inside the pumpkin, so to do them the differential carrier has to be removed.
Its rather simple, pull the diff carrier, press out the old seals with a long pipe into the axle tube, press the new ones in with the pipe through the oposite side axle tube,(have a buddy watch that the seal goes in straight... ) re-install diff carrier, axles etc...
Nice thing with a D44, the carrier shims are under the carrier bearings... so you can't loose them, and the carrier can only go in one way, so its an easy out, and in opperation.
