I have a 99 E250 van, with a 5.4 triton and a 4R70W trans. the other day i was backing up and it felt like i hit someting. ON down the road, my trans shifted from od to 3rd and back. then i was stopped, and took back off and it sounded like it was in 2 gears at once. then it killed the engine. So i got a tow home. The the TC light was flashing so i checked for a code. I got a P1747, Pres Ctrl Sol. A Circuit Shorted. there are no visable shorts on external wires. But there is trans fluid in the connector at trans. could that be the short? Or should i check the wires inside and sol.? Any help would be appreciated.

I have that same transmission if my '00 E250 with 5.4 motor---I've lost OD cancel at the shift lever. It still shifts properly in and out of OD though.
I'm told this is due the solenoid inside the tranny which will require its possible replacement since mileage is also a bit high--235K now. Fluid in the connector can't be good---leaking through the case perhaps? This might be a common problem with the 4R70W's----could be time for someone knowledgeable and honest to give it a check.

I doubt that. I think it's due to a broken wire inside the steering column where the wires enter the shifter handle.

And yet when the entire affected wiring harness is checked all the way to the trans connector we have voltage and continuity everywhere specified. I guess my guy with 22 years experience just don't know his stuff perhaps? I'll send him here ASAP----
I'm typically the first to thank anyone for any help. Just don't let someone come at me assuming I've not done a bit of investigation long before offering an observation or experience.

There are 3 very little wires inside the steering column that go to the OD cancel switch, if one or all (which was my case) are broken you will still have OD and everything will work as it should, short of not being able to disengage OD. This cost me a transmission towing a car from Sc to Wv because I ended up using OD all the way. My best friend is a mechanic with about 30 years experience and he tried everything to fix this except pulling the column apart. I did and found those three wires were broken. Fixed them and now I can disengage OD anytime. I don't believe this is "ncshovelhead's" problem but it was mine. Cost me a trani to learn that lesson.
