Hi all,
I think I may need a new steering box but I am looking for some input prior to making the purchase.
Starting about a year ago my steering would jerk hard to the right or left while driving (smooth road) kinda feels like a sticky fluid valve of some sort. I would correct and it would jerk back. This would go on for a mile or so and would eventually stop. I changed the PS fluid with Mobil 1 ATF and it fixed the problem.
About 4 months ago the same problem presented, I changed fluid again, problem solved again. The problem has started again. This time the fluid change is not fixing it. I have changed out the PS pump with one from Advance Auto...no change. I want to change the box this week as I am fairly sure that it the problem, but I would value some input from others. Plus I just want to make sure the Hydroboost is not some how causing my problem. Does anyone know of a test that a shade tree mechanic can perform?
Thanks for the input!
BTW, the truck is a 2000 PSD 4X4 SC Lariat with 130,000 miles and the front end is tight and greased at every oil change. I do have some "slop" in the steering of the truck and have had this for quite some time.
I had the same thing some time ago, and thought it was a bent steering stabilizer. I changes that, then by coincidence changed the ps fluid to Mob1 syn also. I am now having the same issue. I feel its the gear box this time, and probably was last time as well.

I forgot to mention that I changed the steering stabilizer as well. My thinking was that it was sticking and causing a binding of the steering...I was wrong!
