Battery / Starter ?

I have an '05 which I bought a year ago with 180k that has never started well especially in winter.

Today stopped at the local fill-up spoke with a Gent that was filling up his '07 6.0 130k and btw never had a stitch of trouble even with 10k oil changes. One thing I noticed when he drove away was how quickly his truck turned over and fired. Night and day difference to mine.

Was there any changes done to these trucks battery or starter to the early models to make them start better ? My truck has original batterys in which i have load tested several times - appear okay (will change this fall). Curious if the starter is worn ? Thinking my truck would start a whole lot better if it turned faster.

Note : No difference post oil changes.

My OEM batteries failed at 38,000 miles.

Several things can cause slow starts, kinda hard to troubleshoot.

Starter, batteries, FICM. low oil pressure (high pressure system), glow plugs, GPCM, injector stiction, air in the fuel.

Describe the difference bewteen yours and his in more specific terms.

I personally think it is a different starter. If I recall even new (2004) mine cranked at the same speed as it does now. I have replaced the batteries and still the same. I can tell you that the new 07's, '08's and '09's crank really fast.

I could be wrong or just dumb but I bet the starter design has changed some.

the batteries are the most important part of the equation. your ficm needs 48 v to fire properly. low batts will still start your truck , with reduced ficm voltage. this is bad. check your batts. with a load tester and if they are not up to snuff replace imediatly.they should both be replaced at the the same time.just did my 03 which still had the originals.big difference in starting.

I did have a fault for a glow plug - replaced it and no difference. Also replaced the GPCM - no change. Checked the FICM - okay and load tested the batteries - ok but they are 5 years old.

The one thing I did noticed is below 78 degrees the truck starts better which maybe indicate injector(s) issue.

I'm the same opinion as Joe Blow - the newer truck cranked and started fast. I'd hate to spend money on new batterys to find no change. Just curious if there is a starter upgrade ??

The starter is pretty much bullet proof, and since you need batteries it will not be a big waste of money for nothing. Have you actually pulled the cables and cleaned the battery posts? Connections such as grounds and feed should be clean.
