Shifting issues

Hey guys ive got a ?. My truck wants to stay in passing gear or 3rd gear alot. Ive read about passing gear linkage....where do i look for that? What else could cause it to want to bounce between 3rd and 4th gear?

I would start by checking the throttle valve cable for proper adjustment, freedom of movement etc...

It would help to list what transmission you have. Is it an AOD, E4OD or AOD-E (4R70W)? It makes a huge difference for what advice anyone can give you. If it is an E4OD or 4R70W there is no "passing gear linkage" to adjust. If it is an AOD, it uses a Throttle Valve cable. As noted in the previous response you need to verify it is properly adjusted.

You may find these links helpful:

Ford Door Sticker Decoder .: Articles

Vehicle Door Jamb Sticker Decoding Page

Note down the numbers/letters on the door jamb sticker of your truck. Reference the decoders in the links above. Strangely enough I saw no transmission code for an AOD?

You need to chill, not everybody understands transmissions on here.
There's a lot of info and friendships to be had here on FTE, you just have to be patient on the help you receive if you get any seeing answering posts is not mandatory for us, I've been frustrated, but it happens, it's life, FTE is kind enough to be here at your disposal, but if some people don't have the answer, your not gonna see them posting, I've posted questions, and never gotten answers, It happens, expressing your frustrations like you did, i'm surprised anyone answered at all, it's not that they don't WANT to answer you, it's more like they may NOT know the proper answer, feel lucky someone didn't give you false information just to spark a word off.

The E4OD can be a picky transmission.
Check your fluid and make sure it's not discolored or "Burnt" smelling.
Simple things like that are known to thrown some transmissions off kilter.

Checking the fluid is ALWAYS my first move.

Also, see if maybe your shift sensor/Control module is operating correctly.

Just remember, we are ALL here to help each other, but not all of us have the correct answers to every single question asked.

Just Post, Relax and sooner or later you either get an answer or bump your question.

Your first order of business is to pull the codes, anything else is a complete waste of your time at this point since this transmission is computer controlled and many problesm can be traced back to a sensor or wiring issue. If that checks out perfectly clean then you will have to look elsewhere, given this a 5.0 truck if it turns out it also has excessively tall gearing then you may get a lot of transmission hunting at highway speeds particularly if you are in a hilly area. Again the axle code is on the drivers door pillar and 3.55's are about the minimum I'd want to see with this motor but Ford put as high as 3.08's in some trucks and that makes overdrive all but useless. If that's what you have then you can either change the axle gearing by swapping the ring and pinion or by swapping in another complete junkyard axle, or you can simply turn OD off and forget it's there.
