Help finding tune up parts *Please*

I have a 1978 F600 with what I believe is a 330. No one at my local part stores can find this truck in there computer (so of course Ford must have never built a F600). Will Cap rotor points and such be the same as the 390 in my 71 F250? Where do you guys buy standard parts like water pumps fuel pumps and such for these bigger truck. My parts stores can never find it in there system; they only go up to F350.

I am not sure of the engine size or rather it is an HD or not; can someone tell by this VIN what it should be? F61DVCA1586

Thanks,

According to my 1972 Shop Manual the "D" was a 330HD. There was also a "C" 330MD. Of course those codes could have changed by 1978 when your truck was built.
Which auto parts store are you using? My local O'Reilly's does not have the F600 in their computer- they have to pull out a Heavy Duty Trucks paper catalog when I walk in the door. And since the 330 and 390 are both FE/FT engines I would certainly think that the points, condensor and rotor would be the same.

Just find a parts store with someone older working, and they can still use a book, and are not dependant on the computer. I know how you feel, I had loads of fun in Denver about a month ago, trying to find a 6 volt starter selinoid on a Sunday afternoon. Finally found one that could have it at 7:30 am on Monday, around where I live it would have been a stock item.

I can get the parts you want at Nappa for the FE in my 66 and the Y Block in my 55. I would think they had them for you. I live on a remote island in Alaska.

If it's a V-8 and has points it is almost sure the ignition parts are the same as your '71 F-250

Post #4: The FTE VIN decoders aren't worth TWO CENTS-have all sorts of errors and omissions.

F60 & F61 = TWO WHEEL DRIVE / F65 & F66 = 4WD. The rest of the info is (amazingly) correct.

Like Bill said (in condensed form), yes, all Ford points and cap/rotor from before the 60's through 1973 are the same except the dual-point dizzys. 1974 and up with points, and 1974 cap/rotor until 1976 or so (small diameter) are the same. The HD truck engines like the FT that used points are the same thing too. The large diameter cap/rotor can be used on the older distributors too, I believe.

For the record, marine distributors made by Prestolite that use a clip-on cap use a cap/rotor that are the same as Ford, and use brass inserts and rotor tip, which can be hard to find unless you go to the "heavy duty" or "performance" cap/rotor. You can find these caps/rotors in marine stores sitting on a shelf somewhere getting dusty because they overstocked 20 years ago Not sure about the points, it looks slightly different:
