Hey guys Its pretty obvious that I don't know very much about trucks and engines. But I am wanting to get a better sound out of my engine (351), and I was thinking about just cutting off the stock muffler. Is this a bad idea? Do you think it will be too loud or not produce a good sound? And will it do any damage to my engine?
you can really wake these trucks up by removing or replacing the cats if you go with replacing them get some hi-flo cats and a glasspack or some other type of muffler, and headers will wake it up HP and noise wise, im thinking about straight pipe with a x pipe
When I had my 88 with a 302 I chopped off the muffler and put on a straight pipe. Was gonna do cherry bomb but the shop said with the cats on there it would be muffled enough and it'd get a better sound with a straight pipe. They were right.
On a side note I was driving down the road today and my tailpipe rotted out right behind the muffler. So I need to get a new tailpipe and will also probably delete the muffler while I'm at it. Problem I see with dumping the muffler is that the exhaust coming out of the cat and where it matches up to the tailpipe is not a straight line. The cat would enter the bottom of the muffler and then exit out the top of it so I think you'd need to take it to a muffler shop and have them custom bend the small piece of tailpipe to fit the place where the muffler once was.
