Another silly qwestion for you engine guys.
can you explain the diffrences in cams for me? I called a guy the other day about a 428 crank for my 360 he said he just sold his last one, but he had a hot cam that would realy improve proformance in both 360 and 410 when I rebuild my motor. he gave me lift and duation #s but the #s dont mean squat to me since I have no idea what they are for.

post the numbers and we will steer you in the right direction. I can probably give you a part number for the cam from the specs alone. Ain't thousands of cams out there for the FE like there is the smallblocks.

I beleive that the #s if I wrote them right were somthing like this
460 480 lift and 194 204 duration? part # would be great thanx also alittle bit of what the #s mean would help me understand (maybe???)

That is the edelbrock performer cam. It is a great cam for low end grunt. It's got the stock cam beat to heck. Not a screamer by any means. The crane 343901 is a bit hotter but still very tame and will let you rev a little longer. The performer cam is only good to about 4,500 rpm with stock heads. I don't care what the ad says.

Ill look into the crane cam can you tell me if all the prices are competitive? also what makes one better than the other? thanks again for your help Id be lost without this site.

Picking your cam is all about how you want your engine to perform and buiding your engine to match the cam. Either of the cams mentioned will work great in a stock engine. The 901 cam will give you a slightly higher rpm range at the cost of a little torque (very little) at very low rpms. Both cams will give a very smooth running torquey engine.

If I use the crane cam in my 360 now will it still be good for the 410 I hope to have by summers end? That is if I can find all the parts and time o ya money too.
also do you know would the heads need to be redone right away because of springs and stuff? or could that wait for the rest of the motor to get redone?

I would recommend getting the spring and retainer kit that crane recommends. The part number is 13309-1. You can look at all of their cams by going to cranecams.com.. They will tell you what you need for each cam. It will work great in your 410 as well. You will gain a bunch of torque and move the torque curve even lower down in rpm. You might be able to get by with stock springs until you get the heads done. I don't think the coils will bind but you should definitely not run the rpms up too high. You reuse the cam when you do the rebuild if you keep track of where the lifters were. Egg cartons work great for this. You can even keep them oily this way. Best option in my opinion is to hold off on the cam change until you do the rebuild and then do everything right. If the 360 is wore out to begin with then changing the cam won't really help the matter. Make sure and do the oiling mods as described in many posts over in the FE forum just a little further down the main page.

My 360 is wore out so I guess Ill wait for the cam. Id hate to put it in now and then possibly have to remachine it when I rebuild the motor. thats an extra cost Id do best to avoid. but I will go to the web site and look at what they have to offer thanks for telling me about it your a great help hope to hear more from you soon
