Hi Stu , wondering if you know what is involved in swapping the ring and pinion? i read in one of these forms that you have done that to your F3' maybe , Chuck said he has 5.14 and 5.67 ratio for the f5 and i wondered what that would really take ? we are pretty mechanically inclined , but we dont have any big press or anything of that nature so wondering if thats something that you did your self or is there a machine shop you like ( i think your in IL ? ) he also said he thinks we will need to swap down the f3 ratio . i know the f5 has the 666 ratio , the f3 has the nicer t87 gear box , but is the only way to tell to spin the drive shaft and count the revolutions ? or is it stamped anywhere on the case ? thanks for the advice
wes

I have no hands on experience with this. Chuck swapped the 4.86/1 for the 4.11/1 sets in my axles. I’d suggest talking to Chuck if you want to do this yourself. I know he sells the sets for guys to do it themselves or have it done locally. There should be cog numbers stamped on the case of the axle. I don’t recall the numbers, I’m sorry. Stu

The Timken on the F3 has the ring gear tooth count and the pinion tooth count stamped on the larger part of the differential. It looks like a fraction. Divide the large by the small and you will have your ratio. I have an F3 AWD like Stu’s. I have completely dissembled the front end, save the differential carrier, no need to dive into that. Anywho, the pinion came out with a homemade puller and a little heat from a large propane torch. The manual says to use a press to insert the assembled pinion/bearings into the housing.

The original ring gear is riveted on, I believe the replacement is bolted on. I’m not swapping ratios, so I don’t know more than that.

if you decide to do it yourself, get a manual, and instructions from Chuck. I have read accounts on fte from folks who have done it themselves, iirc.

Won’t be a tag if he has an F3, Timken stamped the ring/pinion tooth count into housing. It will be facing the rear. Or the front as in the case of my front axle.

Off the top of my head, if you see 34 over 7, you have the 4.86:1 ratio. May have to massage diff case with wire brush to make numbers appear.
