I am having a bad day. I just found out that the truck I bought, had had the front axle changed. I don't think the front and rear axle ratios match. It hops on the pavement in four wheel drive. It does fine in the snow. The axle ID tag is half torn off. I know it is a Dann 44-ifs. I believe they robbed the transfer case out of a 1982 so maybe it is that year of the axle but who knows? My truck is a 1980. All I can read on the tag is
"T" (maybe, then) "A EE"
Anybody got any ideas? I am planning on just buying a new rear axle but I can't do that till I figure out what i in the front ratio.
Pop your covers off. Count your ring gear teeth and your pinion teeth. Divide the number of ring gear teeth by the number of pinion teeth. This will give you your gear ratio. Example; Ring gear = 41 teeth, Pinion gear = 15 teeth. 41 divided by 15 = 2.73:1 gear ratio. Do the same on your front and rear axles. Good luck and let us know what you find.
The Dana 44-ifs and the ford 9'' do not have covers you have to pull the whole pumpkins out. and to do that you have to remove the axle shafts. Thanks but I am hoping i can find a different way.
Didn`t think about that. I`m used to my Dana 60s and Sterlings. Sorry. You could do the tire/driveshaft trick, though not highly accurate. Does your door pillar tag have an axle code?
