A difference in what? Traction? Not really, that's more tires and the locker. Many flavors of locker available for the 9". Last year for the 9er was '85 or '86 iirc. Just as many available for the 8.8" also.
Depends on how you're going to run it. If you are running hard and jumping, you probably ought to go up to a beefed heavier axle.
But if you have stock suspension, you're going to break stuff doing that even with the heavier axle....
