FYI

My 2003 6.0 died on the interstate, it would not start until after waiting about 5 minutes, then it would just idle and limp along, then die again, took it the dealer and it was the Fuel Pump, $903.00. I think I got robbed.

Considering what is involved and the price of the pump, filter, and diagnostics it's probably not that bad.

dealer only charged me like $550. I watched the tech install it and it didn't even take 15 minutes. It literally took them longer to get it on the lift than to change the pump.

let me break it down.

2.0 hours diag.
1.5 for the frame mount pump ( ford warranty pays .9)
.7 to replace the fuel filters. (this one is crapy because the new frame mount pump comes with filter installed but we still need to replace the top side) its a menu priced thing in most shops.

then add the parts for the filter, and the pump.
$900 sounds about right.

Ithought $900 was a little steep, but they also charged me for a new fuel filter that I just replace abut 500 miles ago, they said they wouldnt warranty the new fuel pump if they didnt put a new one on.

we hear "I just did that" all the time. sometimes its true... sometimes its not.
If its an aftermarket filter you could have put it in 20 min ago... IMO you need a new one.
I know that is a tough thing to swallow sometimes.

I don't get the 2 hour diag though. When I had mine towed in they hooked it up to the computer. Mech got on one knee and hit the pump with a wrench a few good times. Stood back up and cranked the truck right up and said "there is your problem". I told him to fix and and they stuck it on the lift and swapped it out. Whole process from diag to install to me paying was no more than 30-45 minutes. Truck has ran great ever since then.

2.0 diag is the satndard flate rate at most dealers. this covers hooking up test equipment to what ever level is needed. hooking up test gauges etc. just like the techs.. sometimes the customer wins sometime the tech wins.

remember you pay us for what we know... we never get paid by how long it really taks us.
it can take us 2 days for a 5 hour jobe we get 5 hours pay. it can take us 1 hour for a 4 hour job. we still get the 4 hours.
I wish the system was different too.

Ford isn't the only company that sometimes requires the install of "additional" parts to honor a warranty on a part. A filter is reasonable with a new install in this case, and yes they are high from a dealership, but that's just part of the game. It's possible to FUBAR a new filter with one bad tank of fuel, so what you brought in (unless new in the box) is automatically suspect. The dealership can't control what happened before they got the truck in their posession (make sense?). YOU just want it fixed right the first time and out of the door ASARP. You're paying for knowledge, warranty, AND quality and hopefully a tech as GOOD as Cheezit doing it. And yes, the price is about right for a dealership to do it. Checking fuel pressure at the test port is a PIA to do for the time they get paid.

There's no way to get fuel pressure from the computer. It has to be done manually from the test port on a stock truck. Sounds like you got a deal though.
