Had my truck for a little over 2 years now and after a few small problems when I first got it all has been well until now. Truck is a 2005 6.0 4x4 with 60,000 miles, Mods are no kitty and sct custome tow tune. My problem is my boost kinda comes and goes. Some times when the motor is cold I get 0 boost for maybe 3 miles then it jumps up instantly and all is well. The ohter boost problem i have is when the motor is all warmed up and I realy give her the juice all is well until I let off the throtle then back to no boost for maybe 3 miles again. If I realy stand on it when I have 0 boost it will come up but onyl after maybe 2,000 + rpm (no Smoke). Also I have noticed when I start my truck in the garage the exhaust is has kinda a blue tint and has a very rich smell that will burn your eyes. Any help would be a great. With that said I have come to love my 6.0 even more than my old 7.3
I may be way off here, but if the truck has no boost when you stand on it you'd be leaving a smoke screen behind you. This would make me wonder if your problem isn't no boost, but simply a bad MAP sensor, such that you're not reading the boost.
Just a suggestion.
Edit: OK. Thought about it for a few more seconds. What type of boost gauge are you using. Is it a seperate gauge tapped into the MAP sensor hose? Or is it one of the many that take data from the OBD port. If it's a seperate gauge I'd revise what I said above to read bad gauge sensor. If it's taking it's information from the PCM via the OBD port, then I'd say MAP sensor.
Never had the turbo cleaned. Its had many italian tuneups (can't help myself).. Boost gauge is factory in the dash. Like I said no black smoke but you can tell that it isn't makeing any boost or power. When boost comes up power does to. Still wondering why I have blueish rich smelling exhaust smoke when I first start it and let it run for a few min. in the am. Maybe they are two different problems..
I cleaned the egr (was pretty clean for 60,000 miles) with no change in performance. As I drove it after cleaning I paid more attention to my boost. At 65mph I have about 3# of boost, to get my boost up I have to floor it and let it down shift then boost comes up slow and all of a sudden off like a rocket. If i keep driving it at 65 and 3# of boost for a few miles all of a sudden boost comes up to about 10# and if I floor it boost hits about 30# instantly without down shifting and I pick up speed fast. I am thinking my turbo needs cleaned with do you guys think?? I am still wondering about the blueish smoke at idle and the rich smell that will burn you eyes. Any help would be great.
My truck (62k miles) was acting similar to what yours is a couple of weeks ago...SCT didn't show any codes, but my Innova scan tool showed a P0299 (turbo underboost). Turns out the vanes/unison ring were stuck, and the turbo had to be replaced. Might be a good idea to get the codes read with something else.
Cornfiled, what part of Nebraska are you in? If you're near Omaha, I have a guy you can take it to. He has done a lot of work for the guys in our chapter.
From Plainview Ne. 30 miles north of Norfolk. Know any good shops in my area? Don't want to take it to the dealer. Yes truck gets worked not alot but atleast 1-2 times per month for 1200 miles.
Rich, I'm not sure of any up by Norfolk. The guy I know here actually works at a dealer here in Omaha (Performance Ford) and he is very, very good with diesels. He's had dealer's fighting over him to get him to come to their store. He is the only one I trust to work on my 6.0. I'll check with some of our members up that way,and see if they might know someone to take it to.
BTW, stop by the Nebraska Chapter if you have a chance, here is a link to the forum:
