What is confusing is that the odometer is turning over accurately with the mileage.
I took the VSS out of the rear and it looked good there was hardly anything to clean off. I heard that metal chips sticking to it could be an issue.
So still a VSS? If it was bad, wouldn't the Odo stop counting too?
Do both the speedo and the odo get their signal from the VSS or is there another output shaft sensor on this 6 speed manual that could be at fault?
If it's a VSS I'll grab a new one, if it's the actual speedo, it looks like it can be separated from the rest of the cluster and replaced. (I don't want to lose the mileage)
oooh. Good question. Was going to try that and forgot all about that. Good idea, that could answer the whole thing.
Funny, if I disconnect the VSS and the odo does keep working then I'm going to question what runs the ODO just to satisfy my curiosity.
If it is the speedometer head that is bad the dealer will send it in to be fixed or replaced and your mileage transferred to the replacement. Other shops probably can get the fix also but all I am aware of is the dealer.
I don't remember where they send it or the cost. Sorry, it's been too long ago that I dealt with them. I think that there is something about odometer accuracy (honesty) that requires the dealer to be the one to send it in. At least that was their story.
I did a search for "speedometer repair" and got quite a few hits. You can do it and try to find a repair shop close to you to save some shipping.
I've got an email in with pars guy ed looking for pricing on a speed sensor. I'm going to take it for a spin tonight with the sensor disconnected and see if there are any changes. Also going to see if I get a speed signal through the OBD port with my scanner... Should have more info to go on tonight...
With everything hooked up and running normally, I still get not speedo, but I do get the odometer counting over correctly as well as getting a vehicle speed reading on my scanner through the OBD port:
I disconnected the plug from the sensor on the rear axle to see if I lost either the odometer or the vehicle speed sensing from the OBD port:
Nothing changed other than gaining an ABS light. Still had no speedo, odometer worked fine, and still got a speed signal through the OBD scanner.
I'm guessing there is another speed sensor feeding info somewhere. On the transmission somewhere? (6sp 2wd)
The rear axle sensor seems to only provide a signal to the ABS computer...
