I just bought a 1991 f250 deisel. One of the lugs is broken off. Should I change it or wait untill I'm doing something else with the brakes or something? There are 7 others, do you think I need to change it right away?
Thanks
Lars
I wouldn`t worry about it until the next time you have to take the wheel off. I`ve got a few missing on mine too! UNLESS, you pull heavy loads all the time.
In an ideal world, do it right away. In the real world, if it is on the rear and you do not carry very heavy loads, I would not worry about it until the next brake job.
If it is on the front, I would replace it as soon as possible, especially if you drive at high speeds (80-90 mph).
The longer it goes unreplaced, the more likely other studs will break. I think most break because
1) people do not clean the threads before taking the nut off with a strong impact gun
2) they over torque them.
It is a $2 part. The cost of replacing something in the front if the wheel comes off while you are moving at just 15 mph will greatly exceed the cost of a $2 stud and the labor to replace it.
