Has anybody tried to replace the hood spring bracket with out removing the hood ?I need to replace the spring one one side.it's sprung,.I was thinking I could hold the hood up with a 2by4 and run a comealong from the ceiling to the back edge of the hood to keep it from twisting. This on a 57 F 100.Am I nuts?
Might work, but it would be a whole lot easier if you drafted two more guys to remove the hood. When I did the hinge springs on my 56, I removed the hood and both hinge brackets. I took a couple pictures of the hinge arms before removing the springs. Then I mounted the hinge arms in a fixture (C-clamped to a picnic table) and used the spring tool that looks like a 6" piece of 4" exhaust pipe with two square notches to remove the clock old clock springs and install the new springs. Good luck doing it solo, you are braver then I am.
I am in the process of developing a replacement hinge assembly using a gas charged strut rather than a wound spring...depending on haw adventerous you are you may want to consider this strut option.

I have a new assembly with spring.I am replacing the whole bracket.4 bolts hold it in place plus the 2 that goes into the hood
I think you can do that. In fact when you try it (have some extra hands around in case!), try disconnecting the other side too, and see if you can open the hood much wider. The way mine is set up, it appears like the intent was to disconnect those and use the other hinges to pivot the hood w-a-a-y open to pull the engine or at least get a decent look at it.
