Ohh yea its true. My buddy spent five hours trying to put his girlfreinds in. It added all kinds of power though. She says it was worth it for him to do it. If I where you I would pay a muffler shop to do that mod on that year of truck...
I'd suggest looking into the Hypermax downpipe. It's 3" at the turbo, then bells to 3.5" once it clears the firewall, making connection to your exhaust system easier, and reducing a little more backpressure. It also happens to be the cheapest downpipe I've found. There is a little massaging that's necessary to get a downpipe in, but mine only took two hours, and most of that was removing the old one. Installation of the new pipe: 30-45 minutes.
The total price of the parts is considerably lower than that, of course. The Hypermax downpipe is $130, and you can put together a 4" exhaust for about $125 with no muffler. Adding a muffler is only about another $50. If you can get access to a sawzall, and be able to get the old downpipe off, the rest is pretty easy.
