driveline tips anyone?

HI all im rebuilding a 1951 f-1, and after the swap of engine/trans and rear end, I need a driveline. I think i measured about 61 in from rear end yoke to inside trans shaft . I was thinking of having one made but im broke as it is and wanna get running soon, what are you all using? whats a good donor vehicle to look for at the junk yard? Thanks

i'd say your gonna have to have a shaft cut no matter what , the only way around it is to find a running flathead 6 or v8 and tranny like was in it and the odds of getting one that doesn't need something is not going to be in your favor . so ..... with that said , go look for a late model 5.0/302 or 351 and automatic { i had a 91 thunderbird sport given to me free just tow it off and it ran , and an 87 vic } and put a carb on it and you got a cheap dependable driveline . personally mine , both of them the 53 in my avatar and the 52 customline still got the flatty v8's in them .......... oh and another thing to look for , more complicated a swap but .... i have a 95 tbird with the 4.6 v8 and i have picked up three now , other 4.6 v8's and a 4 valve 4.6 , all sold but the most recent freebie 4.6 two valve with a spun rod , for less than 500 bucks for them in outlay for the two 2 valves and the 4 valve combined , and i paid 200 bucks for the bird running and driveable with a couple of glitches that were esily fixed ............ so happy hunting !!! the deals are out there !!!!!!!!!!

I'm not exactly sure from your description how you measured it. The proper way to measure a driveline is to measure the distance between the centers of the u-joint caps with the slip yoke pulled about 1" out of the transmission. Sometimes this requires a minor bit of guesstimation. With that said, I've never seen any reference listing various driveline lengths. I personally just find one that is too long but has the right yokes and have the local driveline guy shorten it to the length I need, but not everyone has that service available.

I have gone both ways. Had one made balanced and painted for just under $300 and another time I went to a junk yard that had a semi full of drive shafts in racks. That one was $25 and a couple of hours measuring and sorting. Drive shafts connect at both ends with u-joints, so it does not much matter what the donor vehicle is as long as the u-joint part is compatible with your transmission yoke and axle side u-joint. If you are running 400 hp you will want to look for one 4-5 inches in diameter. There is a great place out there in CA, I think it is called Inline Empire Driveline. But they are not cheap.
