Ok, need some help here diagnosing a noise, the noise "sounds like" a pulley rubbing on metal. Now please read what I can say the noise IS NOT:
1) Not engine related, not steering pump, AC compressor, alternator..etc.
2) Not brake related
3) Not transmission related
Noise is coming from the front driver side wheel area and only occurs when accelerating. Does not occur when coasting, holding steady speed or slowing down.
Here is the interesting part, when I put the truck into 4 wheel drive, it does NOT make the noise when accelerating.
So, I am thinking:
1) Wheel bearing, but I would think it would make noise regardless if accelerating, holding steady speed, or coasting, No?
2) I am not very familiar with the mechanics of the auto 4x4 system, but because the noise goes away when the 4 wheel drive is engaged and returns when disengaged, it may be related to this and how?
It sounds like you have a broken vacuum seal on the hub. What it is doing is trying to engage the 4x4 which is why you don't have it when you are in 4wd. Now you just have to figure out where the seal is broken and repair or get it repaired. There could be a few other problems but this is where i would start looking first.
Thanks, I did a bunch of searches and found this bulletin : tsb number 06-8-15 which discussed the IWE solenoid. I am thinking I have narrowed this down to a vaccum issue as you suggested.
I am not however getting a engine code due to a bad solenoid.
Just had the same issue. Replaced the hub due to split in vac. seal. If only one side is making the noise the soloniod is fine since both hubs are on the same solonnoid. As already mention by previous post, inspect lines for leak. My moneys on the hub. (around $150 to fix)
Your hub is not the problem - It might be the IWE actuator, or solenoid, or vacuum lines, or check valves, or all - maybe some - of the above. Search and read the thread "everything you need to know about the IWE system". Follow XJCamaros troubleshooting guidelines and you will save yourself a lot of $$'s. The gear on the hub may be damaged, and require replacement, but that is a result of the ongoing vacuum related problem. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...then-some.html
One important thing to keep in mind while you are trying to diagnose the problem is:
The IWE engages when vacuum is removed. When in 2 WD, Vacuum is applied to the IWE to disengage. When in 4 WD, vacuum is removed.
I wanted to mention to anyone else with this problem, before doing anything, buy a vacuum pump/tester!!! My mistake thinking I could determine the problem without...duh!
I thought the drivers side IWE actuator was bad as that is where the noise was coming from so I removed it from the system, plugged off the vacuum line, and took it for a drive and the passenger side was grinding. So I bought a vacuum pump today and checked the driver side IWE, its OK. Checked the passenger side IWE and it leaks.
My guess is both IWEs were grinding because the passenger side was bleeding down the vacuum.
Going to replace the passenger side IWE actuator Monday, in the mean time I plugged off the vacuum line on the passenger side so I can drive the truck until i get it replaced.
The thread Sako 75 posted is the most helpful trouble shooting article I've seen on the subject.
Don't be surprised if more than one item needs replacing. My right IWE was actually broken internally, the left had a slow leak. After replacing both, the noise still occurred. Turned out the solenoid was bad, which may have caused the IWE failures. At least the system is easy to work on and the parts aren't too pricey if you shop around.
I leave in Minnesota, extreme cold temps in winter... Last winter I noticed the 4x4 would be intermitent... didnt think much of it at the time. Well I just had a major abs module problem (my other posts) and also discovered the solenoid was bad, ordered same from dealer, 48.95. Went to pick up and it was the same style I had on the truck (without the TSB sheild) asked parts guy about it, he looked up the TSB for an 05 and found the updated part was only 28.95 with the sheild... Upon replacment the old solenoid was very swollen like it had water that froze inside it is my guess... still waiting for abs module to get here to test 4x4 as it is disabled at the moment...
