Hi all. I'm having head gaskets, oil cooler and egr cooler replaced on my 2004 Excursion PSD at a local dealership all covered by the Ford Diesel Care warranty. Service writer said that they will install ARP head studs if I supply them but he said that they are much more difficult to install and wants to charge me for two hours of labor. Do they really take two more hours to install and torque than the OEM bolts? By the way, I also had the turbo replaced under the warranty about a year ago. The best $1,800.00 I ever spent. Thanks.
Yes they have to remove the body to pop the heads, that is part of the job. You get that regardless of head bolts or head studs.
Does it take extra time to install studs rather than bolts, well sure. With the bolt you drop it in and torque it. With the studs you have to drop it in, tighten the stud, then add the flat washer and nut, then torque the nut.
I thought that two hours sounded a little extreme but some of the guys on the 6.0l board said that is normal. I negotiated with the dealership for one hour of time and dropped the studs off with them last week.
