Last weekend I took my "new to Me" truck for a road trip to our property, lot of hwy driving with a little city thrown in. On the hwy I kept it at 65-70, drove light footed for the most part and had on average 600-700lbs in the bed. Went 182 miles and took 9.63 gallons to fill up. At 70 mph I am turning right at 2500 rpms, which I am thinking means 4:10 gears in the rear. Either way I was impressed for a 4 door crewcab to pull off that kind mpg.
Not bad at all. I have heard the odd case of some one getting within spitting distance of 20 MPG even in the low to mid 2000s for RPM. Sounds to me like your injectors and timing are working exactly how they should. If you are able to limit yourself to 55-60 MPH, I'm sure you can bust through 20.
with my 2 car i got average 16.7 thats 4.10's with 37's pulling usually 12k behind me. took 2 cars to LA again with my 42's still with 4.10's and im down to 13.5.
Recent 3000 km trip- highway, rpms at 2200-2500, averaged 14 - 15.5 miles per Imp gallon. This was with our full size camper on the back, stops a lot of wind. The A/C use accounted for the lower numbers at times!
All in all, pretty decent for a heavy 4X4 with a camper. I don't expect to make money driving it. My brother in law has 1989 f250 gas engine with five speed and it is such a dog with the camper, mpg is below 10 and he can't even use overdrive on the highway so I'm happy to have a strong running truck that can handle this kind of travel.
