Ok I have been having some trouble with my truck starting when warm. I can go out and start the truck cold but after it runs for a a little bit and I shut it off it is very difficult to start and when it does start it runs very rough. I pulled codes and it gave me #116 “ECT out of self test range 0.3 to 3.7 volts” I have not checked the sensor yet but could that be causing my problem?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> <o> </o> Thanks in advance
Yes, that is the cause. The ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor tells the computer the engine temperature and if it is sending incorrect information, the computer is not adjusting fuel/air mixture and timing correctly.
Well put the ECT sensor in and the truck started right us and ran good, took it for a test run and it started to stumble really bad. Took it home and ran codes again not I have #172 “HEGO sensor circuit indicates system lean (right side)”. Could this be caused by the ECT being wired incorrectly because I had to put a new pig tail on for it and it did not specify which wire pin 1 & 2 had to be connect to? Thanks again<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
If you managed to mis-wire the pigtail it won't give you an alternate code but rather the same code since the computer still won't be getting the right information from that sensor. My guess is that you have multiple issues that are going to rear their ugly heads one after another. Code 172 is a tricky one since the best test to troubleshoot the cause is a bit involved. Was this code in the flash/memory codes or did you perform a full KOER test and get this code during that? This information will help narrow down whether it even makes sense to perform the troubleshooting test for this code or not. My gut tells me that your ECT sensor issue has created a problem in another part of the system due to the fact that a faulty ECT sensor can have one of two effects on the engine... it will either run lean when cold causing a "hard start" situation or it will run rich when warm causing the stalling and bogging down once ti has warmed up. A rich condition over extended periods of time will cause sot and carbon to build up in the exhaust system. This leads to other problems. So, again, did you get Code 172 right away in the flash/memory codes or during the KOER test?
Amen. I would suggest clearing the code from flash/memory codes (also called CM or continuous memory). Give it a good test drive then check all three code areas again...KOEO, CM, KOER. Like Greystreak said, the bad ECT may have caused the O2 code in the continuous memory area.
thanks for the help but got home last night she started right up and ran great, guess it all got cleared out. put in some sea foam and drove to work today, ran great all the way
Glad to hear it. Give it a few days and pull the codes again just to be sure nothing else comes up. Not saying anything will but its best to check after the computer has had some time to "re-learn" the engine parameters. If nothing is amiss you should just get Code 11 or 111.
