Angle of the Dangle

I am adding 12 inches of lift to the back of my truck and I am trying to find out what the maximum angle you can have on a u joint so I can set things up right but I cant seem to find that info. Anbody know?

the less the better. if you have a CV joint at the tranny (which i doubt) you want the exact same angle at the axle as you do at the tranny. this will cancel out the vibrations and noise. as far as max, i personally wouldnt take a standard 1330 joint past about 20* and expect it to live a long time.

here is a guide i have used for years and pass along to those who can use the info. this is mostly just a reference though, your specific circumstances may be different

Measuring propshaft Angles Phasing

I think you have to keep a the angles the same with a standard u joint also but my truck has always had the pinion in line with the drive shaft. I should have 1350s

Thanks

That second picture has the axle rotated up to lessen the angle...

Yea I see that and thats what is confusing me. I have standard u joints and my stock setup had the axle rotated up so the pinion was in line with the driveshaft. The pics show that setup should be for when you have a CV joint at one end????

I just put the right side spring on the rear today. I don't think I will have it up on the 37 inch tires I got for it for a couple of weeks but Ill try to get some pictures up soon so you can see how it is coming along.

Thanks for the help people.

Nice pics man!!!!!!!!

I'm against pinnion tipping. if you do, make sure you over fill the pig. need to make sure those bearings are getting oil. If you tip it up, you might not get oil to the outter bearing on the pinion. =)

Laf, your truck sits higher without tires than mine does with tires.

How much lift are those rear springs?

They look like 12" or so.

My reason for asking,

That truck has 20" lift leaf springs with stock length spring shackles mounting them to the hangers.

For the spring to compress, the stock length shackles did not have enough movement (length) to let the spring straighten out almost any at all.

He might as well have welded brackets down to the axle and mounted it solid.
Very hard ride, dangerous on uneven ground since the springs did not flex.

The stock setup had the pinnion tiped up a bit and all worked well. If I am lucky It will stay the same.
