79 F-100 Overheating

79 F-100 Overheating

I have a 1979 F-100, 351 Modified. I never had an issue with it getting hot. A couple weeks ago I had to replace the ignition module, coil, distributor, and both caps. Now the thing runs hot all the time. (Not overheating just Hot. Always at the top edge of normal.) I checked all the belts, flushed and replaced antifreeze, and rechecked the timing. 6 degrees above top dead center. The fan is working as it is an original, so I believe the fan clutch is not bad. Any other ideas? Please help its driving me nuts.

If you changed the distributor, I'd mess with the vacuum advance. Advanced timing really makes the motor run hot. Since these distributors were used in so many different motor families in so many different applications, there's no guarantee that the timing curve in the one you installed is the same as the truck had originally.

Just a guess. Try connecting the vacuum advance, give it some throttle and see how many degrees of advance you're getting, then go from there.

Califasbob makes a good suggestion. Also install a water temp gauge using a fitting in the thermostat housing. The dash gauges are not really reliable.

79 Ford Overheating

Try the link I have posted. I also had trouble with my 79 351 M overheating and the link will show you what I found out. My problem was a vacuum problem.
