I have -87 F250 4x4. I'm repairing engine compartment rust damages. I noticed that there is grey paint which not looks ordinary car paint. It looks more like plastic coating.
- is grey original colour in engine compartment?
- what is type of paint?
- is it possible to purchase?
- similar paint for touch up painting?
The engine compartment-firewall, inside of fenders should match the exterior color of the truck, frame and cross members should be black. It sounds like you have some type of polymer paint-hard to know where to buy more, check with big box stores or auto part chain stores.
I would suggest removing the plastic paint (aircraft grade paint stripper) since sometimes these plastic type paints will pop off if not properly applied. A good grade of rusty metal primer along with a rust type paint (Restoleum) might be a better choice. The best paint I have seen for metal is an industrial paint line by Tnemec. They use it in the petroleum industry and alot of water tanks exteriors.
