OK guys here is a strange one, I have a 91 Ford Super Duty with the 7.3 IDI and yes it is Naturally aspirated. For some reason I get asked if it is turboe or non-turbo.
Any way, I pulled my air cleaner earlier today to inspect the filter, after I put it back together I developed a Humming noise coming from the air cleaner intake, it is really noticable at 900 rpm then it blends in with the other sounds the truck makes as the rpm's increase but it does not go away.
I did put in a new air filter and that did not help, but if you throttle the air intake with your hand the noise appears to go away.
Has anyone ever run across this before, just seems odd that it started after I pulled the air cleaner off, it maybe coincidence, but it does appear to be getting more noticable the longer you run the truck.
It appears to have seated back down, atleast it feels like it is, but I will recheck it just to be safe. Would the inlet screen have anything to do with it?
Only thing else I can think of is it may be the normal sound of the engine,,if you replaced a bad dirty filter its getting the proper air flow now where it was restricted before. I think I would leave it alone..
Kenpobuck...that is one of the many things I plan to fix on her, I do not know why they took it off to begin with, she probably needs new injectors too. I am in Florida an the outside air is not that much cooler but every little bit helps.
Dave...I never thought to check the throttle cable, I have been so concentrated on the sound and that it appears to be coming from the air can to even look at the throttle cable. I will definitely check that out.
