my 73 crew has a problem with hard starting, ive narrowed it
down to a bad choke or no choke, the choke is always wide open
and if i push is almost close the truck fires up, how do i go about setting the choke the correct way...
Quick and easy answer: With everything cold (about 50° to 60°) and the throttle held partially open, rotate the choke housing until the choke butterfly just closes. This will get you in the ballpark. Of course there other adjustments like choke pull-off and fast idle speed but a manual will cover those in more detail.

Do you have the hot air pickup tubes on the exhaust manifold? They tend to fall off. I replaced my choke cap with an electric one. It now works properly.
