Has anybody ever had a problem with their windshield wipers suddenly operating while on the highway. My wipers are coming on while I'm driving and I can't get them to stop. I try cycling through the intervals as well as running the cleaning fluid. And then as mysteriously as they started, they stop. Any suggestions?
I have never had that poblem in my 4.0 93 Aero or any of my Fords or others. It sounds like a short in the wireing to the wipper switch. With the car parked wiggle the wipper arm switch with the ignition on, tap on the area around the wipper stalk were it comes in to the column. Flex the tilt steering up and down & see if it comes on. My bet the problem is there with worn insulation on a wire

Yes, I've had the same problem, usually when hit with a wind gust from a passing semi. My problem was the park switch for the wiper motor was worn (out of adjustment). Removing the wiper motor and re-setting the gap on the switch solved the problem. There was an earlier post covering this subject in the Aerostar forum, discussing how to adjust the gap.
At least on the 91 4.0, you have to remove the cowl vent to get access to the wiper motor. Removal/installation is fairly straightforward from there.
