At the Colorado GTG yesterday, I found the culprit of why my O/D light on my shift lever wouldn't work - finally! I went ahead and bought a new assembly from Ed because I was certain that the short in the wiring was in the shaft somewhere. Well, after looking the old part over and over again, I found the bare wire and where it the insulation was worn off. Just a head's up to anyone that has the same issue. Just look the wires over and chances are, you'll find this.
That'll do it. It's a common problem on the 92-97 body styles. My 94 had the same problem. I gave the new wire a few layers of electrical tape just for good measure in case it started rubbing again.
OK here's what I can remember. First, unhook the batteries. Second, there are three phillips screws from underneath the plastic steering column to take out. Third, remove the adjustable steering column lever by unscrewing it. Fourth, insert the key into the ignition and rotate to the run position. Fifth, look under the ignition tumbler and you will see a silver button, press it with an awl or jeweler's screwdriver and pull the ignition assembly out. Sixth, remove top plastic cover. Seventh, the lever assembly is exposed to see the wire wrap over the top of the steering column. You may want to remove the lever (there's a drift pin that holds it in place, just tap it out and unhook the connector.) Pull the assembly out of the truck and examine the entire wire loom. You may see what I posted. Good luck.
