I have a '74 Hiboy with the stock 360/4spd. In previous trucks I've owned with the same configuration, I swapped the stock 360 for a slightly modified 390 and have not been satisfied with performance. I've considered upgrading to a 460, or even economizing with a 300. Are there challenges when deviating from the FE engine- should I just leave it stock- Any recommendations?
You weren't satisfied with a warmed-over 390, but you think you want a 460 that will get worse gas mileage or go with a 300 that "might" get better gas mileage?
I guess the best case scenario is the 300 using the same engine perches as the FE.
As for an FE you can go from a 275 horsepower grocery getter to a 1000+ horsepower asphalt melter.
Check/research your tranny's bolt pattern and compare it to the 460. I think you may also run into an incompatibility with the flywheel or flexplate. Someone will correct me if I am wrong.
How was your 390 equipped? My 390FE is stock except for a Edelbrock 1406, 2105 intake, and Hedman headers feeding into a 2.5-inch exhaust system with Moroso Spiral Flows. It goes good.
When people ask me what kind of gas mileage I get, I respond, "Some - I get some gas mileage".
The machinest that built my last 390 claimed to have equipped it with 428 heads and cam. Maybe I was expecting too much, but the change wasn't stellar and I could never get it to run quite right. I would be content with less performance as long as it was dependable.
