1989 ford f150 4.9 engine Told to replace egr valve, truck still has a hesitation or a stumbling effect when doing 45 to 60 mph, past 65 it evens out and runs pretty smooth... Also have a rough idle... do all the same things most folks do, new wires .new plugs, rotor , cap etc... replaced 02 , tps, egr valve , and guesss they call it thermoactor valve... Any suggestions to repair these problems would be greatly appreciated!! Thank You All; you have helped me a lot on understanding the operation of my truck, first one I ever had with all these gadgets on it... I like those old fords, last one was a 1970 ford van... I had an 85 with that engine. Good engine except for the manifold bolts kept backng off. Check with a wrench, if you can't pull any codes. The engine will run bad if any intake manifold bolts are loose. Similar to what you describe. I ended up taking most of the bolts out and adding lock washers. Just one more thing to check.

You only need a paperclip to pull the codes - the '84-95 EEC-IV scantool is a rip-off. It only does exactly what the Haynes manual and that web page show.
Based on these boards, and experience with my 4.9, it seems that the V-8's need the EGR passages cleaned out and new EGR's as they get older, but if you mosey over to the Inline Six forum you'll find many of us are actually blocking the EGR pasasges off to get rid of hesitation and stumbling (which is very common in older EFI I-6's until the 'fix' is done) .
Thanks Gamma forgot to mention that after installing the new egr valve truck acted the samee stumbling etc. tok off the vaccum line plugged it and now it runs great at any speed, Gonna shoot over to inline 6 forum now....
