I can't get the glove box door open on my "new" '71. I've used about all the gentle persuasion I care to between tapping the **** with a hammer and prying from the side with a flat bar. I've attempted to "jimmy" with a credit card too with no luck. I don't want to damage the door. At this point I'm ready to sacrifice the glove box and cut out the bottom in order to get to the latch. Anyone have any ideas??
Several aftermarket places (probably should shop Kens store 1st)
sell these it's just fiberboard, glove box door costs more, the dash mounted part of latch has loosened up and won't release the glove box button is my guess.
I went forward with sacrificing the box and carefully took a look at the treasures inside. It was kind of interesting. You name it and it was in there: 4 wire trlr wiring kit - unopened. Two Loctite mirror mounts kits - unopened (guess thats why the mirrors still laying on the dashboard), a map of the Coconino National Forest (AZ), some 1157 bulbs, a boat registration, I can go on. I think this glove box has been jammed for some time.
The good stuff: A number of service records confirming the 71,000 miles on the odometer is accurate. (This AZ truck did spend some time in Jackson, Wyoming though and I have discovered some light rust in ripping out the rubber floor). I did get the original owners manual and some registrations. Also got something I've never seen before - an "Ownercard" with the original owner's name and address with a metal vin plate (just like what's on the door) on the bottom of the card.
Oh, and I got the glovebox door open by unscrewing the latch from the door. The mechanism was jammed pretty good. A little oil and I think it'll be ok.
That card was part of new car/truck sales they called them Protecoplates and the dealers made a big deal about having it when came for service. I have one with my orig. manual also. Shows my truck was sold new in Hawthorne CA.
