1986 f150 wiring issues

I was wondering if anybody had a wiring diagram for an 86 headlight circuit. the previous owner had some fuses in the fuse box that were too large for the wiring and some of the wires have melted. i am trying to fix it but i need a wiring diagram for the headlight switch. if anyone has one and can post it that would be wonderful or if you know where i can find one to look at online that would be helpful as well. thank you for any help you can give me.

I don't have any diagrams for you (sorry), but if it comes down to it, you could install a relay behind each headlight. Alot of people like to do this anyway so that they get full battery voltage to the lights. Just a thought.

I was going to do that anyway, but the wires around the headlight switch melted a little and i am trying to figure out which ones go where on the switch itself so i can fix it. if anyone has a picture of their headlight switch connector that shows which wires go where in the harness, that would be very helpful as well.

Check this out, Whiter Whites, Brighter Brights .: Articles Not sure if it will help with your switch but it explains the relay thing pretty well. I bought the relays and wire but havent gotten around to it yet.

There are two methods to do brighter lights ... 2 relays that requires more wiring or 4 relays that require less wiring.

The headlight wiring is inadequate from the factory.

I have my harness apart more or less so I may be able to help with specific questions... I am (slowly) in the process of doing the same, I chose to unwrap the harness, remove the original left headlight wires and add the wires needed for a 2 relay setup back into the harness.

However, Someone like Franklin will be along that can just rattle them all off for ya!

-Enjoy

Thank you, that would be really helpfull. my wiring has been really messed up by the previous owner and i really need to make sure i have it all put back together properly. i have traced alot of wires and i think i have an idea of what it should be like but i would like to double check my work. alot of my headlight and stereo wiring has been melted because the PO had fuses installed that were way to big for the the factory wiring and alot of the wiring has melted the insullation off. I am very fortunate that it didnt start and electrical fire because someone had a 30 amp fuse installed in the radio wiring circuit and a 25 amp fuse that melted into what i think should have been a factory 15 amp tail light circuit. Im not sure on some of the exact amperage numbers right now because it is too dark out for me to see what the fuse block says it should be, but i know that all of the melted wires were on circuits that had a fuse that was too big for what the wiring was designed for.

I dont want to have to purchase an entire new wiring harness and i am going to wire up a new headlight circuit with the relays and completely new wires for the radio i am about to install but i need to see what factory wires controlled the instrument cluster dimmer and dome light and running lights and things like that. a facotry wiring diagram would be the most helpful for that, but with what ive already traced through the factory wiring, just a picture of the back of the headlight switch wiring harness where i can see what color wires go where would be just about as helpful as an entire wiring diagram.

i have been trying to find a pdf version of the factory service manual and wiring diagrams online but when i look on ebay, all i find is paperback stuff and they want way too much for them and i dont really know where else to look. when i search, i find alot of stuff for earlier year f150's, but nothing really for anything from 82 to 86. does anybody know of anywhere that i could find the FSM or factory wiring diagrams at a reasonable price.

Sorry this post got to be so long, but i felt like it needed to be to fully explain what ive been looking for and what my problem is. I really wish i already had the factory wiring diagrams because then i dont think i would have needed to post this. I am not looking for a freebee here, just some help with a specific problem. I just bought this truck and am more than happy to pay to get the factory service manual and wiring diagrams but i really want to have a pdf version of them and for some reason it seems to be difficult to find that, so any help in that matter would also be greatly appreciated.

The brown wire is almost universally the instrument lighting dimmer.

It's not uncommon for the headlight switch socket to melt.
Ford used this same switch for eons in many vehicles so repair plugs with a wiring pigtail should be available at any good auto parts store.
You won't need to replace the entire harness.
My information says a Pico brand #5730 8 lead socket fits a 1980 Ford pickup.

That number should cross if the auto parts store carries another line.

I have had good personal experience with a headlight relay harness sold in the LMC truck catalog.
(#47-3660 for your '80-86 application.)
While it may not be the highest quality it has made my lights noticeably brighter and taken that power draw off the switch itself.
I found it much more convenient than hacking my harness, and less expensive than buying the individual components.

There are a couple of members of this forum that often share images from the factory manuals.
Subford is one that immediately comes to mind.
Perhaps he will find this thread or you could PM him when you have enough (25?) posts to enable that feature.

Welcome to the forum Blue_Betty.

I hope these pictures help, if not let me know and I will get the ones you need. Also if you need plugs or wires or switches I can sell you what I have in my truck, I know it all worked. The truck is going in for scrap by the end of the week.

Thank you, that helps alot. its hard to see all the wires to the switch in the picture, so let me verify what it should be.

Is that correct?

How much would you want for the fuse block and main wiring harness?

That is correct. Guess I should have done the to start with, but it's fun swearing at my camera and computer.

ok thanks. that really helps. it wont let me respond to your email im assuming because i dont have enough posts yet, but i would need the dash wiring harness including the fuse block and i would want it so that its not cut out but in a condition i could just plug it in and replace mine with. If you want to email me with your email address, we can discuss it more off of the forum. Thanks again for the pictures.
