I have a 2001 Expedition 4x4 5.4 that has started to slip intermitantly on initial take off. This is my wifes truck so I cant describe it exactly. She said that when she takes off, the motor revs slightly and then fully engauges. She also said that it only happens maybe a couple time a month. Any ideas?? I would like to get out ahead of the issue if possible to try to keep something major from happening.
I will say this and take the blast from everyone. The truck has 140K on it and I am not sure if I had the fluid flushed or not. I am a maintentance freak but I guess I overlooked this since I hardly ever drive it. Now I am hesitant because everyone that I seem to talk to says not to do it now for the fear that it will cause more problems.
Change the fluid or at least the filter. I assume that you have checked the level and it was full. These trans will have a slip on starting off when they are a quart low on fluid or if the filter is clogged. If the fluid is brown or smells burnt you have gone too far and you are looking at a rebuild soon, no matter what you do.
Thanks for the response. I have checked the fluid and its full and doesnt smell burnt.
It's up to you. Either change the fluid and filter or the filter only and inspect what is in the trans pan. The magnet will likely have a lot of fuzz on it.
Question: Is the overdrive light flashing on the shift handle. If so then there's an issue with the Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor (Code P0715). Whenever I have problems I always put the scanner on it to see if there are any codes; I don't want to be playing the guessing game. I have a problem with shifting and it sounds similar to yours and after scanning for codes I got Code P0715 (turbine speed sensor circuit malfunction - bad speed sensor). Save yourself some time and possible headaches and have Autozone or similar run a scan on your vehicle to eliminate other possible issues - besides it's free.
If the light is not flashing then definitely change the fluid and filter. Here's a link to my thread on doing a complete flush and fill and not just a drain and fill. Since you will do it yourself you may as well upgrade to the Mobil 1 synthetics.
Do the fluid/filter change it won't hurt anything. Thinking so is old school based on old technologies. If that doesn't solve the problem then you're looking at a bad torque converter or a tranny rebuild.
Thanks guys for all of the info. Sorry for the late response, I took the truck to Cali for the week. So here is the update...
Update, just got back from a trip to Cali from Az and got to experience the issue myself. It only happened twice on the week long trip and seems to only happen when it is hot. It feels like its not shifting into first and even had a rotational noise when I let roll. Then all of a sudden after letting the truck run for a little while(3-5 mins), put it back in drive and everything was fine?
After reading all of the replies, I will go ahead and perform the fluid and filter exchange. No flashing OD light but I will have it scanned for codes to see if anything comes up.
One other thing I forgot to mention before. I do notice that when I shift it into drive and let my foot off the brake, it doesn't really move much unless you give it gas. Pretty much the same in reverse. Again, worse when it is hot.
Side question, does anyone know of a good tranny guy in Tucson to have this looked at? It would be nice to be able to trust someone to give honest advice and not fall victim to the everyday "you need a new one" mechanic.
Personally, I'd take it to a Ford Dealer. That way any work done to it and you are covered by any Ford dealer worldwide.

A Ford reman has the best possible warrantee. If you or a friend does the installation you just take the vehicle to a Ford dealer and they look it over and validate the warrantee with Ford. At that point if there is ever a problem with the transmission you just take the vehicle to any dealer and it will be repaired or replaced as needed and the warrantee continues. It does not start over. In my opinion it is the best warrantee in the business. The reman trans was offered to me about 18 mos ago for $1,450.00 exchange.
What is the warranty on the ford reman? I found a guy on the internet close by in Phoenix that specializes in tranny rebuilds and offers a 30 month, unlimited milage warranty for $975.
I am still hoping that it is something that can be repaired for much cheaper, every penny counts these days!

When I checked, the warrantee was 36 mo. or 36,000 miles nationwide. I have heard since that it is now 36 mo and unlimited miles.
It would be best to check with your local dealer and ask about all of the details such as towing and so on. If you travel the Ford trans could be the best deal if only for peace of mind.
