48-50 Rear Cab Mount Question

I installed new rear cab mounts but my cab still seems like it's low in the back. I'm wondering if I installed the mounts correctly. As you look up from underneath which way should the "suitcase" mounts go or does it matter? Would the cab be higher in the rear if they were mounted one way or the another?

It seems to me it does matter, but only because the rubber block won't work if the dogbone is upside down

From that diagram I have them in correctly. What would make the back of the cab appear to droop? Perhaps it's an optical illusion...

Mine sits lower than I'd expect, too. I suppose the frame bracket can get beaten down, the floor of the cab can sag... Are the holes for the dogbone bolts wallered out?

Do you think that the dog bone style replacement arm (only one now available I think) would help?

Why would it make a difference? I'm trying to learn here, so maybe I misunderstand the installation. In the end, what determines how high the cab sits is the distance between the two holes in the mount, right?

Yep, …………..but when I looked at mine, the bushings in the old arms where totally shot allowing the cab to sit lower.

I was actually referring to Old F1's suggestion of a different style of mount. And unless the mount is actually supported differently (again, not that familiar with this particular part) if installed one way versus another, the distance from hole to hole is the same, so I can't see where it would change the cab height by flipping it. From the diagram above, though, it looks like it could be supported differently or could interfere with something if installed wrong.

You're right about the center-to-center distance, Dave, the only difference it makes is the action of the rubber bumpers (green in pic below). When the cab sways side-to-side, the rubber re-centers it and acts like a shock absorber.

The new cast iron dogbones are all that's available AFAIK, and since they are the stock '53-on mounts, I've always wondered if they are exactly the same length as the stock '48-'52 pieces. I have the dogbones and like I said, my cab seems a little low in the rear.

I'm using reproduction dog bones so there's no wallowing out. I wonder if the 48-52 dog bone is the same as the 53-56 (distance between the mounting holes)? Could I have gotten the wrong ones?

I am glade this thread is on here. I have a question about the dog bone. I have a 51 and am going to put all new cab mounts on it. Do I need to replace the old dog bones with the new style one's?

I don't know anyone who sells the original stamped sheet metal bones; I think someone sells new bushings, but usually the bone itself is in pretty sorry shape. My understanding is that the cast iron dogbones are what came on '53-on, and there are several places selling repro's. Be sure to get a full set of the rubber pieces (4 total).

I don't think I understand what the other rubber pieces are that you are referring to. All I got were the dog bones. There doesn't seem to be any place where anything else can be mounted...

The frame bracket has tabs that retain rubber blocks above the dogbone; it is a real treat to get them in there and compressed -- they are stiff!

Looks like LMC has them only in a kit; Dennis C doesn't list them; might want to try JobLot. I guess there are only two, one on each side, look at the green area in my pic above, too.

Check out Sac Vintage ford's site. They have adjustable dog bones.
