I found a 87 F350 in the paper. I was going to go look at it, but I wanted to know what year the 7.3 came out in. Was it 87 or 88? All the paper says is its a diesel. Thanks.
I believe it was 88' for the first 7.3L. If you look at it, test drive it and look for tranny problems. Electronic Overdrive was very new. Turn the truck on and off a couple times and make sure the tranny shifts correctly everytime. the light should not flash. And if you ever need to have it rebuilt seriously consider the upgraded tranny, you will waste a lot of TIME and MONEY if you dont. $1700.00 in sensors, a rebuild and 4 different opinions has left me with a tranny that on start up sometimes wont go out of 1st gear. Its embarrassing to sit there and restart your truck 4 times before the tranny will finally let you go.
I'm thinking it was 88 too. Not sure though. I called the guy and he said he didn't know if it was 6.9 or 7.3. He owns it and don't know. He did say it was a four speed manual 4x4. He said it was in really good shape, but he's the one selling.
The 7.3 was first made available for the 1988 model truck. It was hooked to the C-6 automatic transmission or the 5 spd standard trans. You can tell it is the 7.3 by looking at the heads, which had reinforcing webs between the lower head bolts. Hope this helps.
i am glad to hear its not an auto. but the 5 speed has had problems with the flywheel. when you start it listen and feel for a shudder. also when you release the clutch it may shudder (without accelerating). a friend of mine has a 96' f-350 with a 5 speed and it shudder so hard on a cold start it crack the bell housing in half. My dad's 95 f-350 is also shuddering and my friend's 90' f-350 dump shudders real bad. the auto doesnt seem to have this problem. Just something to look for, hopefully it is a well maintained, low miles diesel with a longlife ahead of it.
Yeah, I know what you mean about the flywheel. We have a 90 F350 7.3 liter that we use as a work truck on our paving company. It has the ZF-5 tranny and it cracked the bell housing on it. Had to pull it and have it tig welded and replace the flywheel. Expensive little boogers too.
