Gear oil

Heard different stories about changing the rear chunk oil. My 2002 dually I believe has the 10 bolt Dana 80. So I am going to get some valvoline 75-140 synthetic at wally world today. Does the rear take 4 quarts? And I only see one plug middle ways up on the back side. I assume I fill it there and wait till it starts coming out? Anything wrong with the valvoline? And I was not intending toi get the Friction Modifier as I think its already in the Valvoline. Does this sound right. Thanks Guys Maxx

On a side note. Does synthetic absolutely have to be used or can you use regular gear oil and just change it out more frequently. Im on a budget and synthetic is outrageous. I know its good stuff but is it truely needed. Thanks again maxx

yes, you need to stick with Synthetic even though it's mega bucks. I used the 75w-140 Valvoline Synthetic and liked it. Yes, 3 1/2 to 4 quarts is what you need. Just make sure the truck is on level ground when you pump the new oil in the pumpkin using that top bolt (that faces the front of the truck) and fill until oil starts to seep out of the hole. I don't have a LS rear but I'm pretty sure that the Valvoline has the modifier in it.

Thanks Chris. Not sure I understand about the "top bolt facing the front" unless I missed something I only see a 3/8" drive plug on the backside of the diff cover about middle ways up. I called myself looking for another fill plug but didn't see one? Maxx

Yes, the fill bolt is on the cover on the back of the diff. Stick with synthetic and make sure it has the modifier in it.

Chris has a one wheeler in the back with the little rear end, so he don't know what the big boys have.
