I just put my c6 in the shop for a rebuild. the guy doing the work said that a shift kit would greatly improve the performance and allow it to handle more horse power when I start the motor work. I told him go for it. was I smart by doing this? this truck is my fist major project its a 71 f100 360fe c6 2wd. I plan on making the motor a 410 if I can find all the parts so far the crank and rods have been giving me alot of trouble. a good 390 is not out of the qwestion but I do want as much power as possible in the end. short of n02 or blower anyway.
IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED
THANX in advance
Yes, you did the right thing by having a shift kit installed. A good portion of the heat build up in a transmission occurs when the tranny is shifting. The clutches disengage and the tranny shifts in to the next gear, then the clutches re-engage. During the period of re-engagement there is a period when the clutches slip. This is where they produce the most heat. A shift kit helps lessen this period of slippage, and consequently helps reduce the build up of heat.
So thats what he ment by firmer shifts. I think I understand a little more than before. is this going to help in my power to the pavment at all? and should I go ahead and put an exturnal cooler in to help keep temps down? o-ya will passing gear still work?
Yes a good built C6 will help put the power to the road and Yes you sound get a good tranny cooler ..about the passing gear..I dont know but I think it depends on the kit ...some kits allow you shift into any gear at anyspeed (fun fun) .. last year I used to deliver newspapers in the company vans (300I6/C6) one night I was messing around and droped it into 1st at about 55 needless to say there was no difference it just sayed in second ..dont put it into reverse while moving forward (25mph) it isnt good for the tranny and it stalls the engine (lol)
