I'll start this off by saying: I drove a friend of mine's truck today, it is a 2002 F-250 4x4 AT with a chip and shift kit/drilled out valve body all from Brian's Truck shop. All I could say was WOW!!!!! That truck would fly.
So, my question is, will I see a good enough improvement with a custom tuned chip on stock injectors to justify the cost?
Will it make EGTs unmanagable when towing? (I will have the intercooler installed soon)
You'll still be kinda dissapointed compared to the 02 cause your sticks are so much smaller. If its not a necessity for you now I'd save the cash and buy the chip and sticks at the same time. Don't get me wrong, it will help, thats just what I'd do
I have two right now. TW and DP. Love them both. PHP is a good chip also and Beans has some good tunes also.
I would choose one close to you if you can. But Il. is not close to any of them. Beans is in mid Tn. and they have a dyno onsite in case you want to pick it up in person and run the dyno to be sure of your numbers. PHP is in Ga. so is DP Tuner. TW is in Texas and is sometims hard to get intouch with.
Any of these will do you good.
Others that are notable: Gearhead, Cale at BTS, Jim at Rosewood also does PHP tunes. He is in NE Oh.
I believe BTS will tune a 6 position TS style chip.
I only have experience with DP tunes and have almost no complaints. My only gripe was with the drive-thru tune... it was so smoky I didn't dare use it. Jody was gonna re-burn my chip this spring but I ended up selling the truck.
